JBS Once Again in B3’s Carbon Efficient Index
07 | 03 | 2023

JBS, the world’s largest food company, has once again been included in the portfolio of the Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2) of B3, the Brazilian stock exchange. Staying on the ICO2 is a reflection of the Company’s commitment to the best sustainable practices. The index lists publicly traded companies committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Among the factors that explain JBS’ inclusion in the index are the management of GHG emissions and the transparency of data on the advances made in the low carbon economy. The recognition is also in line with JBS’ commitment to its journey of becoming Net Zero by 2040, which has encouraged the company to expand its investments in projects linked to the circular economy and the use of renewable energy sources in the supply chain.
“JBS’ inclusion in the B3 Carbon Efficient Index reflects our commitments, which are geared towards becoming Net Zero by 2040. We were the first company in the protein sector to establish this commitment globally and we are advancing on several fronts to reach this goal, including circular economy and renewable energy,” says Maurício Bauer, Corporate Sustainability Director of JBS in Brazil.
Last year, the company launched two new businesses linked to the circular economy: Genu-in, which produces collagen peptides and gelatin from bovine skin, and Campo Forte, which uses waste from the operations of JBS companies as raw material for the production of organo-mineral fertilizers. In addition, JBS Biodiesel opened its third plant. To produce biodiesel, the new site located in Mafra (SC) will use recycled frying oil and soybean oil from crushing grains used in the production of bran for poultry and pork.
Still on the clean and renewable energy front, Swift has expanded the use of photovoltaic panels and advanced in its plan to have 100% of its stores supplied by solar energy by 2025. Another major action was the creation of No Carbon, a company specialized in leasing 100% electric trucks. These vehicles are already being used in the logistics fleet of Seara and Friboi for the distribution of products in urban centers.
More recently, JBS also became the first food company in Brazil able to issue International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC), which certify generation from environmentally clean sources. The certification was obtained through Biolins, a thermoelectric plant located in the city of Lins (SP) that uses several types of biomass as raw material, such as sugarcane bagasse, wood sawdust and eucalyptus residue.
Sustainable Recognition
At the end of 2022, JBS advanced in the global ranking of the CDP, the largest and most respected global platform for corporate sustainability information. In their report, the institution upped JBS’ score from B to A- in Climate Change, above the average (C) score for food and beverage companies.
JBS was evaluated in 11 criteria, standing out in themes such as “Energy”, “Business Strategy, Financial Planning and Scenario Analysis” and “Disclosure of Opportunities”. According to CDP’s criteria, the A- score means that the company is implementing the best market practices in the assessed theme.
