JBS Couros, the leather processing division of JBS, has just completed social assurance at its units under the Higg FSLM Protocol – The Higg Facility Social & Labor Module, which is supported and used by the leading retail and fashion companies worldwide. The assurance attests to the respect for human and workers’ rights across the entire production sector and the existence of social well-being programs for the employees of JBS Couros in and outside Brazil
The assurance process is the outcome of the focus and the efforts of unit leaders, together with the company’s HR, Quality, Sustainability and Environment teams. For four months, 15 manufacturing units of JBS Couros in Brazil were subjected to the assurance process, in addition to those located in the United States, Italy and Argentina where programs are running until the end of this year. In the operation in Uruguay, another social assurance, the Sedex Member Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA), was undertaken and is an important instrument in the food sector.
The social assurance process at each unit included legal analysis, documentation and interviewees with employees. The company’s final score depends on factors like compliance with labor legislation, safety standards and aspects of employee experience, a harassment-free environment with opportunities for professional advancement, as well as physical and moral safety.
“Guided by the values and beliefs of the JBS culture always behaving to ethical standards, compliance with the legislation, fostering equality and diversity in the work environment and affording our team members’ well-being. These are the practices we have adopted in our daily work and which were evidenced in the assurances issued by Higg FSLM”, points out Neilton Viana, HR director of JBS Couros.
All JBS Couros units evaluated scored higher than 94%, with a mean of 96%. The global mean indicated by Higg FSLM in 2022, bearing in mind all the companies evaluated by Step 1 of the methodologies, is 93%. JBS Couros is currently the largest processor of cattle hides and global leader in the industry, with 22 manufacturing units, 5 distribution centers, 2 research centers in Italy and much more. The company produces leathers in the wet blue, semi-finished and finished stages for the automotive, furniture, footwear and artifact sectors under the brands Zenda, V-Block, Virgus, Kind Leather, Authentic, Kind Leather Evo, Leather Labs, JBS USA Leather, Conceria Priante and Cambré.
