Four projects of the JBS Fund for the Amazon will receive over R$ 3 million

The JBS Fund for the Amazon has just received more than 3 million (the equivalent of 600,000) for investment in projects in the biome. The donation is from the Overseas Resources Foundation Limited (ORFL) and will be invested in four of the Fund’s initiatives. With the exception of the initial donation by JBS of 50 million, this is the largest financial injection so far.

“Companies and organizations worldwide want to invest in the Amazon to help tackle global warming while contributing to one of the planet’s most important biomes. The Fund’s projects cover an important diversity of the forest ecosystem and the regional bioeconomy”, says Joanita Maestri Karoleski, president of the JBS Fund for The Amazon.

ORFL, which operates in the leather and footwear segment and employs a production process that uses recycled materials, is the first Asian institution to invest in the reforestation, eco-economy and R&D projects of JBS Fund for The Amazon. The proceeds will be allocated over three years and, at the request of the organization, will be earmarked for the following projects:

Fair and Sustainable Fishing Project: will strengthen the pirarucu chain by purchasing a factory ship, as well as a feasibility study for building a processing plant. The project will last for two years and is expected to benefit 450 families.

Inclusive Community Economy Program, in the Bailique and Beira Amazonas Communities in Amapá – over three years, the program should contribute to expanding the incomes of 240 local families. It is planned to build a local factory to produce pulp; expand the higher value-added product portfolio; draw up a plan to lyophilize the fruit, which reduces the costs of the logistics chain; in addition to building schools and training young people and women for this work.

AMAZ (Accelerator & Impact Investments): the first business accelerator focused on the socioenvironmental impact of forest-based business. Amaz will leverage the acceleration of 30 startups in five years, to be supported by a philanthropic resources fund and private investments, as well as business training and mentoring.

Technical Partnership with Embrapa: the initiative will engage in research and develop technologies for adding value to forest produce, with innovations for plant-based foods, raw materials and inputs from plant nanofibers.

“For many years, we have supported community projects in Brazil; now, we have the privilege of working with the JBS Fund for the Amazon. The Inclusive Community Economies Program improves the management of community businesses and supports education and women’s participation in the businesses. We are supporting the fair and sustainable fishing project, like AMAZ, the business accelerator of the Amazon, creating jobs and businesses whose aim is to create solutions for biodiversity. Lastly, we are excited about the Technical Partnership with Embrapa aimed at developing technologies that add value to forest products. Its objective is low or zero-carbon technologies. All these projects support the local community and job creation. We are happy with the partnership with the JBS Fund for the Amazon”, says Kim Pleatman, member of the board of the Overseas Resources Foundation.
